Shanna Mastrangelo  is the owner and co-founder of Birthroot Midwifery LLC based in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. She is a Certified Professional Midwife with the North American Registry of Midwives and is licensed to practice midwifery by the Virginia Board of Medicine and the Maryland Board of Nursing. Shanna began attending births as a Certified Birth Doula with DONA International in 2007 after the births of her two children.  She completed a formal study program in midwifery through the Virginia School of Traditional Midwifery followed by a clinical apprenticeship with senior midwives before sitting for credentialing exams in 2013. Her experience includes a volunteer internship abroad at a high-volume maternity clinic in Indonesia, under the supervision of internationally recognized midwife Robin Lim, at the Yayasan Bumi Sehat Foundation. 

     Shanna began her journey as a care provider by becoming an Emergency Medical Technician in 2001 and volunteered as a EMT at Williamsport Ambulance Company in Maryland in six years. Additionally, Shanna has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Shepherd University and is currently pursing a Master of Science of Nursing (MSN) at Georgetown University in Washington DC, which will eventually allow her to provide primary care to whole families as a Nurse Practitioner. 

         Shanna is a member of the Midwives Alliance of West Virginia, The Midwives Alliance of North America, and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. She regularly participates in group peer-review sessions and continuing-education classes in midwifery related courses of study. She is a Qualified Preceptor for midwifery students through the North American Registry of Midwives. 

           When Shanna is not caring for her clients, she enjoys spending time outdoors kayaking, hiking, climbing, and camping with her husband and their two children.
